WVSSAC spectator/student code 3.3. The spectator shall: 3.3.a. Realize that they represent the school just as definitely as does the member of a team, and, therefore, has an obligation to be a true sportsman, encouraging through this behavior the practice of good sportsmanship by others. 3.3.b. Recognize that good sportsmanship is more important than victory by approving and applauding good team play, individual skill and outstanding examples of sportsmanship and fair play exhibited by either team. 3.3.c. Recognize that, since the primary purpose of interscholastic athletics is to promote the physical, mental, moral, social, and emotional well-being of the students through the medium of contests, victory or defeat is in reality of secondary importance. 3.3.d. Treat visiting teams and officials as guests, extending to them every courtesy. 3.3.e. Be modest in victory and gracious in defeat. 3.3.f. Respect the judgment and integrity of officials, realizing that their decisions are based upon game conditions as they observe them. 3.4. The student shall: 3.4.a. Be courteous to visiting teams and officials. 3.4.b. Participate to the limit of their ability. The true student does not give up, nor do they quarrel, cheat, bet, or grandstand. 3.4.c. Maintain a high degree of physical fitness by observing team and training rules conscientiously. 3.4.e. Demonstrate loyalty to the school by maintaining satisfactory scholastic standing and by participating in and supporting other school activities. 3.4.f. January's Capturing Kids Hearts them is RESPECT. Remember to share photos of your children demonstrating Respect to amguthrie@k12.wv.us or Facebook messenger and we can get them posted. Thank you! What is Respect? Respect is the willingness and ability to act professionally and thoughtfully with ourselves and others. Leaders can deal respectfully with opposition and provide space for both dignity and differences to coexist. Why focus on Respect? Respect contributes to a positive culture. People feel safe, supported, and engaged in the context of thoughtful social, emotional, civic, and intellectual interactions. Respect decreases conflict. Respect helps us, and others, to be able to express ourselves without fear of being judged, humiliated, or discriminated against. Respect encourages empathy. Respect helps us to understand each other and put ourselves in someone else shoes. Respect in Action: Teach students words have power. How we talk to others, and ourselves, can motivate or discourage, connect or destroy, hurt or heal. We should choose our words with care. Create opportunities for group decision-making. Open dialogue engages students in a process where compromise is crucial to making decisions. Vary protocols for classroom sharing. Frequently use open-ended questions, partner sharing, and small group activities to connect and promote understanding between students.

Important dates for November

Nov. Dates
The Capturing Kids Hearts monthly theme for November is Team Work. What is Teamwork? Teamwork is the ability to work in unity with others towards a common goal. For us to learn how to become team players, it is important that we learn to listen, encourage our peers, and allow and invite others to contribute their talents and skills. Why focus on Teamwork? Teamwork improves communication: Teamwork helps us improves our verbal and non-verbal communication skills, conveying that we care and a relevant message. Teamwork builds interpersonal awareness: Growing a great team requires us to first build strong relationships through better understanding ourselves and others. Teamwork celebrates diversity. Teamwork thrives from diverse ideas that come from a mixture of different genders, cultures, expertise, experience, and problem-solving approaches. Teamwork in Action: Call them a team, not a class or group. A group consists of many different people. A team, however, has a common purpose and a shared responsibility for success. Require teams to set expectations for and manage their own behavior. Do not tell teams what type of behavior is expected -- let them decide for themselves with a Social Contract. Teach and encourage affirmations. Giving affirmations helps connect the team and builds trust, promotes engagement, and boosts a positive culture.
