Attention families of 8th graders: Is your middle schooler interested in investigating the universe and studying the mysteries of outer space utilizing data from the Green Bank Observatory in Pocahontas County? Accessing the information under the guidance of nationally recognized scientists and instructors, students will learn about planets, the Milky Way, black holes, and distant galaxies at this year's Governor's STEM Institute for 8th graders. The Capturing Kids Hearts theme for February is Kindness. What is Kindness? Kindness is the ability and willingness to express care and compassion for others. Kindness is a choice to use our time, talent, and resources to better the lives of others and the world through genuine acts of love, compassion, generosity, and service. Why focus on Kindness? Kindness boosts positive emotions. Acts of kindness create neural pathways that enhance feelings of well-being and the natural flow of feel-good endorphins and neurotransmitters. Kindness is self-replicating. When we perform an act of kindness, it is likely to encourage others to act in a similar way. Kindness reduces stress and anxiety. Kindness promotes positive relationships with other people. Anything that helps you to build bonds with other people helps decrease anxiety. Kindness in Action: Celebrate small things. Start each day with Good Things as a class. Publicly and privately affirm kind and thoughtful actions and attitudes. Create opportunities for students to regularly affirm each other. Once a week, dedicate time for students to write notes of affirmation to classmates and school staff members. Model Kindness. Be mindful of body language, tone, and mindset. Kindness is learned by example!

The Governor’s School for Entrepreneurship (GSE) fosters innovation, critical thinking, and a growth mindset while expanding students’ confidence and professional network. Sweetheart Dance: The PTO will be having a Valentine's Day Sweetheart Dance for the Elementary students grades K-5. The dance will be on February 14th from 5:00-7:00pm and will be held in the cafeteria. There will be music, snacks, refreshments, photobooth, and plenty of fun and love in the air. The homecoming game will now be next Saturday against Shanksville at 12 and the homecoming dance will be that Saturday evening at the original time . The pep rally will occur on Jan .25 th at the original time and spirit days will start on Jan 23rd as originally scheduled . The pep rally will occur on Jan. 25th since the PBIS trip is now the 26th. Judging will take place at the schools on the following schedule: Wednesday, January 24: Pleasant View Elementary Paw Paw Schools Thursday, January 25 Warm Springs Intermediate Warm Springs Middle Students that are eligible for competition in the County science Fair need to bring their projects to school on Monday, January 22.

The Governor's School for the Arts summer program provides students with a unique opportunity to enhance and build artistic skills in creative writing, dance, digital literacy, instrumental music, painting and drawing, theater, and vocal performance. The program provides an inclusive community for artists of all types. Current 10th-grade students are eligible for the GSA. Auditions and portfolios are reviewed for admittance.
